Hello Friends! I trust you are all well. In this blog, I will be talking about YSL Tatouage Couture Liquid Matte Lip Stains ("YSL Matte Stains"). A relatively new product in Australia (these became available in Australia around February 2018 with a much earlier International release) and comparing them to similar products from Chanel (Rouge Allure Ink) and Dior (Dior Addict Lip Tattoo). I have chosen to compare them to Chanel's and Dior's versions because they are from French luxury brands on par with YSL.

Chanel launched its Rouge Allure Ink as part of it's Fall 2016 collection. Dior launched its Lip Tattoo in the Summer of 2017. Prior to the two, there are also many other smaller brands that have a lip stains collection.The YSL Matte Stains were first launched Internationally around August 2017. This is particularly interesting to me because it seems like YSL took its time to formulate its version of a lip stain, instead of rushing the product.

Let's start with my thoughts on the YSL Matte Stains. There are 16 shades. I was blessed with 4 from YSL PR in Australia. YSL的公关给了我4支口红。 I've tried the following shades (它们是):

"Tatouage" means "tattoo" in French.
The swatches are shown in the photos below. I think I say this quite often but I'll say it again if you are new to my blog. I prefer to do my swatches on white paper. I feel that my skin tone could affect your judgement of the shades.

Chanel currently has 14 shades in its Rouge Allure Ink line. One of the Chanel Allure Ink lipsticks that I have in my collection; "146 - séduisant" has micro glitters in it that give this shade a rose gold twinkle.

Occasionally, not all shades in a lipstick collection perform equally. Possibly due to the type of pigments used. However, I did find that the No. 1 Rouge Tatouage; No.11 Rose Illicite; and No. 8 Black Rose Code, each performed as well as the other. No. 3 Rose Ink was a bit more watery in consistency.
FORMULA: fairly watery when compared to the Chanel and Dior versions. This is not a criticism of YSL's. I'm just noting the difference. Chanel's has a slight creamy texture.

SCENT & TASTE: YSL's tastes "floral" and "fruity". It has a light sweet taste. It has a corresponding scent. Its scent lingers for a while and then as your nose becomes accustomed to the smell, it becomes redundant. Chanel's tastes sweet and has that "lipstick" taste (waxy lipstick). Its scent is not immediately perceivable. Dior's tastes a bit like marshmallows. Sweet like candy. It has a slight minty smell with a touch of candy.

PACKAGE DESIGN: YSL's comes with a "frosted-glass like" plastic rectangle tube which allows for immediate shade identification. Chanel's is the same except that its rectangle tube has rounded edges. Dior has instead a rectangle tube that is coloured with a shade closely resembling the shade of its Lip Tattoo. All of them have a matte finish except for the caps.

APPLICATOR DESIGN: YSL's has the most interesting applicator. It is like a painting knife/spatula. It is thin, mostly flat and has a slight angle to the applicator sponge. The "brush sponge" is like an inverted "U" on top of the black applicator stick (which quite cleverly has the YSL emblem on it). Chanel's has a black applicator stick with a triangle shaped sponge applicator. Dior's has a white applicator stick with a classic doe foot sponge. I very much LOVE YSL's applicator. I am better able to adjust the intensity of colour I want and I find it much easier to "paint" my uneven lips within the lip line. I was able to use the fine tip of the applicator to draw a line around my lips much like a conventional lip liner and then use the flat side to fill in my lips. Chanel's applicator though triangle in shape, did not allow me to do the same. The edge of Chanel's applicator was not as "sharp". I had the same issue with the Dior version.

LONGEVITY: This should not come as a surprise to you. They all last for a very long time, which includes eating and drinking. The pigments of each "sink" into your lips and as their names would suggest, give you a stain lip look. The colours are all buildable. I would suggest that you use a moisturising lip scrub first as some of these can settle into the fine lines on your lips, making them more obvious. They are "waterproof" in a sense. The performance of the lip stains from each brand are fairly on par with each other. They all wear down to a fairly even lighter shade. They are fairly hard to remove (which is a good thing right?). I had to remove them with a makeup remover followed by micellar water.

FEEL: Each feels like your lips have been coated with something. When I smacked my lips together, the YSL Matte Stain feels smooth and matte. The same can be said of the Chanel and Dior versions. They are neither moisturising nor drying on the lips. The Dior version has a slight minty tingle upon application. I was neither creamy like the Chanel version nor was it quite as watery as the YSL version. I do not have a preference between any of them.

KISS-PROOF: In comparison to Chanel's and Dior's, I felt that YSL's "settled and set" faster than the other two brands. YSL's version (based on my trial of the 4 shades noted above) are kiss-proof (i.e. transfer proof). It took Chanel's version approximately 15 minutes to dry down and become somewhat kiss-proof (there was still a tiny tiny faint amount of pigment that "transferred"). Dior's version also "settled and set" fairly quickly. Pretty much on par with YSL's version. Dior's version was also kiss-proof.

WHO WINS?
Uhhh, that is a pretty hard question to answer. For me, the YSL applicator wins hands-down for easy and precise application. YSL also has the widest shade selection (Chanel stands at 14 and Dior at just 6). I adore Chanel and Dior as much as YSL. Out of the three brands, I felt that the fragrance of the YSL one lingered the most. I am a makeup collector so I have a fairly substantial collection of each brand (you are probably thinking: "yah, so what!?"). I guess what I am saying is that I would buy them purely because of the brand. I do however want to get more YSL shades. The YSL one does stand out because of its very clever applicator design.
